Questions? Straight answers.
Everything preparers ask before switching to Unity — pricing, software, banking, support, and what it takes to join.
Why do tax pros use Unity?
Because it eliminates the junk-fee stack — transmission, bank-product markup, state fee, service-bureau cut — that quietly drains money from every bank-product return everywhere else. One flat $20 per accepted return, everything in. You decide what to charge your clients; none of it disappears into a fee stack.
Who founded Unity?
Unity was founded in 2011 by Robert Kluba, a nearly 35-year veteran of independent tax preparation who built and scaled a ~500-office national tax franchise (ExpressTax) before selling it to H&R Block in 2007. In 2013 he introduced the flat-fee model Unity still runs on today — one $20 per accepted return, no junk fees pulled from the taxpayer's refund.
How can Unity charge only $20?
The flat $20 is possible because Unity makes its money one way — the per-return fee — instead of on the stack of transmission, bank-product, and service-bureau fees competitors layer on. There's no hidden margin to protect.
How much do I pay for Unity, and when?
One flat $20 per accepted return, paid as returns are filed through the season. New offices start with a $300 credit on their account that covers the first 15 non-bank-product returns — nothing owed upfront.
How much does the software cost each year?
Zero. Professional tax software is included free, year after year, with unlimited users and year-round support.
How much are refund transfers?
Free to your client. Republic Bank refund transfers with Unity carry $0 refund-transfer fee and $0 state funding fee — no fee comes out of your client's refund.
What's the contract structure?
A one-year agreement — no long-term lock-in, no exit penalties. Nearly 95% of preparers renew year after year.
I'm not tech-savvy. Is the software hard to use?
No — it's intuitive, with integrated tax help always on screen. And the platform is 100% cloud-based, so there's nothing to install, network, or maintain — we've taken the tech burden out of the equation. A dedicated onboarding team configures the software, converts your prior-year data, and trains you and your team before the season starts.
Does Unity offer training and support?
Yes — year-round support with a bilingual first line for software and banking, on-demand training, live group webinars, and one-on-one sessions with people who know your business.
How soon can I start?
We start within 24 hours. The onboarding team handles data conversion from your previous software, configures everything, completes your Republic Bank enrollment, and gets your office season-ready.
Is there a minimum return requirement?
Yes — a minimum of 75 federally accepted returns to qualify.
Do I need an EFIN to join?
Yes. An active EFIN issued by the IRS is required. We ask on the Get Started form so we can qualify quickly and point you the right way if you're not there yet.
